What are Dental Crowns?

Crowns are caps shaped to your tooth and can be placed over the tooth. Crowns help protect your teeth from damage including injuries and wear and tear on them as you get older. With a crown, your tooth stays protected while improving the shape, size, appearance, and strength of your tooth structure at the same time.

How are Same Day Crowns Different From Traditional Crowns?

CERC Digital Same Day Crown technology

Traditional crowns require several visits to see your dentist. On the first visit, you’ll have x-rays and impressions of your teeth taken.

You’ll also have the tooth that’s receiving the crown “prepped” which includes removing decay or damage in the tooth to create a secure base for the new crown. On your second visit, you’ll have your temporary crown removed and replaced by the permanent crown, which is placed onto your tooth.

But single-visit crowns are different because you only need to come into our office once. Many of the same steps are followed when you have a same day crown placed, but it takes much less time out of your busy schedule.

The most significant difference between single-visit crowns and traditional crowns is CEREC. CEREC, also known as Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic. Dr. Reilly uses this state-of-the-art digital technology to create custom crowns, along with veneers, onlays, and inlays, all in a matter of minutes.

The CEREC system uses CAD (computer-assisted design) and CAM (computer-assisted milling), giving us the ability to look at your teeth from every possible angle. Your crowns are both designed and milled digitally right at our office during your appointment. You’ll even be able to see the outcome of how your crowns will look before treatment, thanks to the software capabilities of the CEREC system.

CEREC “Single Visit” Crown

A busy middle aged professional was seeking immediate treatment for his broken teeth. He was very concerned about the amount of time and number of appointments it would take to complete his care.

Dr. Reilly was able to offer the patient the convenience of permanent crowns in a single visit.

Who is a Good Candidate for Same Day Crowns?

Although same day crowns are an excellent option, they may not be the right choice for everyone. The only way to know for sure if you’re a good candidate for single-visit crowns is to schedule an appointment at Three Rivers Dental in Greenland, New Hampshire, to learn more.

Same day dental crowns are best if:

You have a tooth that’s become chipped or cracked

If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, a same day crown can help repair this damage. They’ll Crowns can protect your teeth while maintaining the structural integrity of the remaining natural tooth structure. A single-visit crown works by encircling your damaged tooth and allowing it to become stronger.

Same day crowns can be helpful if you have a severely decayed tooth. Dental fillings may not always be sufficient to restore the functionality of the tooth. A crown can strengthen the remaining tooth structure once the damaged portion is removed and extend the life of the tooth.

You have a tooth that’s worn down due to grinding your teeth

Grinding your teeth is a common problem that can cause unsightly damage. If you’ve worn down a tooth from grinding your teeth at night in your sleep and it’s become cracked or chipped, you may be exposing deeper layers of your teeth.

This can leave your teeth more vulnerable, looking flat, and quite unattractive. Single-visit crowns can help your teeth look better while also restoring the shape and size of your tooth.

You want to cover up a discolored tooth

Though the main reason that many people choose crowns is to help improve their oral health, you can also use them for cosmetic reasons. If you have a discolored tooth that you want to cover up, same day crowns can help you accomplish this. They can also cover up teeth that are too short or uneven. Talk to your dentist to determine the best way to achieve your cosmetic goals.

What is Getting Same Day Crowns Like?

The process of getting single-visit crowns is quick and easy. With everything done in one visit, you’ll be able to get back to your busy schedule faster. First, Dr. Reilly will begin by preparing your tooth and removing any decay that’s present.

Digital scans are taken and used to create an impression of your tooth. The scanned impression is then shown on the computer screen and allows us to look at your tooth in three dimensions from every possible angle. The completed design is then digitally transferred to our in-house milling unit. The milling unit takes the design, where it makes the unique custom restoration a reality.

A ceramic block that’s the closest shade to your natural tooth color is selected, ensuring your new crown will match seamlessly with your natural tooth color. The ceramic block will then get placed into the milling unit, and in only 15 minutes, it finishes creating your new crown using compressed porcelain. Compressed porcelain is the preferred material for crowns because it’s stronger and more durable, saving you time and money.

Once your crown is done milling and ready, Dr. Reilly will try placing the crown to get a correct fit. After that, your crown will be heated in a special oven to crystalize the material. Once cooled, your new crown will get polished before being placed over your tooth with dental cement. The whole process only takes one two-hour appointment, and you don’t have to come back for another fitting.
